Larry,
Welcome to the list!
I can't speak to the Bandit issue though I admit it looks great. As far as
riding the back roads and twisties go I can say that on my '99 I can't beat
most of the sport bikes but they have yet to lose me when I didn't want them
to. The suspension absorbs the road much better than street only bikes.
Once you have traversed a rough section of a back woods two rut you will be
hooked on the KLR and that's a promise. I have the stock kawi windshield,
kawi tall and Rifle + 11 and I generally run without a windshield at all.
I'm 5'10" and at 70 it starts to get noisy. At 55 it's beautiful. If I'm
going to be on the road for more than an hour on 70+ mph roads I'll use the
Rifle and slouch a bit.
I also can't talk about 1000 mile trips since I haven't made my first one. I
know that a wider seat would probably be useful but those are available too.
I have a corbin I bought used and its like sitting on a couch. Wide and
comfy.
I've also had Steve Kesslinger's lowering links (
www.qualityengine-rd.com)
mounted for a little over a week and absolutely love them. Makes the bike
just plant itself in a turn. Lowers seat height about an inch and a half.
What part of the southeast are you in? If you were near a lister you might
be able to sweet talk someone into a test run. I have yet to see a KLR in
the showroom anywhere down here.
Good luck and happy hunting!
