changing my final drive ratio

Fellow KLRers, I hope someone can give me some pointers here. The manual shows how to remove and reset the spring loaded tensioner for the cam chain but doesn't get into how to manually set the tension. I seem to remember a recent post stating that you could insert a socket extender into the adjuster hole and push it until you hear a click. Does anyone have experience with this?
