model identification

I bought my KLR650 second hand and would like to identify exactly which model it is. I see in the archives people talk about an A10, A12 etc. If I am unsure of the bikes year of manufacture (It was first registered in 96, but coule be a 95 model), how do I tell which "A" model it is? Can I look at the engine number?
