crash (broken wings?)
At present I'm fixing
everything that got broken over the weekend, damage seems to have been
isolated to the front upper areas of the bike (and me, except for both
ankles but the swellings going down
) both mirrors gone, couldn't find
them, including part of the pot-metal housing that the left mirror shaft
screws into. Handlebars folded back and down into the right side of the gas
tank, bent them a little so I will have to replace them, I now have fuel
capacity of approximately 5.9 gallons instead of 6.1 ;-> . The instrument
cluster was almost completely destroyed, ripped from the housing, crushed on
the spedometer side and only held to the bike by the wiring harness and one
battered screw. Remarkably, the front blinkers and headlight came through
okay but the frame that holds the headlight and cowl was bent along with
some of the smaller support members behind it. Of course, all the plastic
up front took a beating but I can still use it. I'll have to replace a few
things but it's still as rideable as ever. I pulled off all the broken
pieces ( now it really looks like a big dirt bike with all the facade
removed) and put the handle bars, brake, clutch and throttle back in place
earlier this evening and rode it around my back yard. Except for the bent
handlebars it seems to be none the worse for wear ( I rode it home from the
"mishap" by the way, that was an odd trip.), I love this bike! Thankfully,
I had removed my extended Kawasaki windshield for dirt riding or it could
have been very ugly, as it was, the face shield on my HJC CL12 was stripped
from the helmet ( in the fully closed position ), I don't know where it went
but it didn't damage the mounts when it left. My leather Olympia gloves (
with gauntlets and rivets in the palms ) did the job and you can see where
they went to work, still in great shape though. If I would have had my
Roadcrafter suit ( 12 week backorder, should get it in November, hopefully I
won't be to dead to use it *>) I would probably only have had a bruised rib
and ankles, I lost a little skin on one elbow, very minor but the branch
that stole my visor also came up under my nose and scuffed it up a little as
well as the same directly over my jugular vein, to close, much to close.
This all happened somewhere around 50 MPH. My purpose in all of this is not
toward bravado or to brag but to let you know what my bike went through and
how it came out the other side as well as how some of my safety equipment
performed. If any of you can advise me on replacement parts ( other than
stock ) for those things broken I will be grateful. Later?
