uk klr 7500 mile svc tips

KLR 650 C2 1998.After reading so much useful info, time I passed on some tips!  No centrestand, use 2 axle stands under the engine, height of 11" allows the bike to be rolled from off the sidestand onto RH one, and then raise sidestand with foot & slide LH one under. At point of balance, front & rear wheels can be removed, & it's easy to lift bike slightly and slide stands fore & aft for front & rear maintenance (I weigh 170lb & am 5'7". Takes a couple of goes for practice.   Valve checking is easy, but I found the rad & coolant tank frames need bungeeing out of the way, and the coil bracket needs undoing or the valve cover won't slide out.   After 7500 miles, the Unitrak and swing arm come apart easily for greasing.    Front fork oil change requires the forks to be compressed with the springs out (no need to remove forks.  A piece of rope wrapped around the wheel hub & the fork clamps & then pulled tight and tied off easily hold the forks compressed to do the fill procedure.  I found that draining the oil into a plastic bottle with the top cut off & the filling witht the same qty of clean oil is a quick way to get close to the accurate level, then as some guys before have suggested, use a rule to measure from the top of the inner tube on  the fork to the oil, which is just visible below. (152 +/- 1mm from top).   Buying a couple of cheap torque wrenches to cover the range required is a worthwhile investment to avoid stripped threads -after 23 years in aircraft maintenance, I still don't trust my calibrated knucles!   For us Limeys, www.buykawaski.com is invaluable for getting the right part nos as well as supplementing service manuals (which cost 55!!).  Most part nos seem to transfer across from A to C models.   Getting one fingered writers cramp, hope someone can use the info Keep the technical tips coming!!   Miles G.
