good buy ???

Post by Ric Merry » Sun Aug 20, 2000 3:49 pm

Hi all. Ric here, new subscriber. I'm looking at a '93 KLR with 14,700 miles. Has Givi trunk and side racks, Acerbis hand protectors, new tires, K&N filter, new sprockets, Progressive springs, and SS brake line. Seller wants $2100 ! I'm just about ready to buy this when I ask him about last valve service and he says "Never" (he's second owner). Engine sounds good (as it would if valves were too tight eh ?) Wisdom of the group on this issue would be greatly appreciated. Ric Merry soon to be new KLR owner current Concours owner WA State

Ric, A '93 with under 15K miles, huh? You best be careful with it when you get it. That KLR isn't even broken in yet ;-) Gino

Ric! Good to hear from you. Been doing the LD thing on the Concours this year? We had a great rally up in Nelson BC last weekend and the Hyder AK trip on July 4th weekend was truly one of the most enjoyable trips for me as the breathtaking scenery wit all the snowcapped mtns and Bear Glacier on the way to Stewart.. on the way to Hyder. Have you heard this story?.... There I wuz walking into Puyallup Kaw (WA) store to get a rear tire on the KLX and two weeks after the store had a fire. Going out of biz they said and selling the bikes for dealer cost plus shipping. So I walked/rode out on a '00 KLR last Oct. I coulda got a '00 Connie for $6750 but after reading about the adventure motorcycling part of riding I knew that this would be another adventure and really wanted a different moto than I already had, tho I sure didn't get rid of the others!. This KLR list is very good for info and has an info archive too. One thing I have learned is the last major update for the KLR was the '96 model. Updated clutch and counter balancer... maybe more? Last one I talked to bought a '97 last fall with 1800 mi on it for $3k. Yeah a damned good deal. Now the KLR is a bit old in the tooth, more than the ZG 1000 IMO. But it is a great bike. Not outstanding in any one area so much but outstanding overall with distance and pavement especially and the best bang for the buck too. I was fortunate emnuf to take it too the Copper Canyon in Mexico this last Mar. I pretended I wuz rich and shipped it too Phoenix, flew myself there and rode it from there up into the eastern Mtns of Globe/ Superior.. east of Mt Graham on the Reddington Rd which was sand/gravel on down south into the lower desert via sand washes across the road repeatedly. The bike handles all pretty well. I installed a DOT Kenda 270 rear knobby before I left too. This was the first I had it off highway and other than a tendency to slide the front tire ( with stock D 750 tire on front) it was a blast doing the road at 50-70 and more mph. I went south to Tombstone and down to Douglas staying on hwy 80 which then heads north east towards I-10 thru Apache country. I ended up in Deming NM where I met 11 other for the group ride to the Canyon. That was a 550 mi day and it was long but I held up surprisingly well as the ergonomics are good for large/tall riders IMO. We had another day before we left and went northwest to Silver City and past and south on hwy 191.. whooee this is the best twisty LONG mtn stretch of road I have ever been on.. reminds me of Hwy 12 Lolo Pass (MT/ID) but even longer maybe. So that was the 2nd day in a row of 500 plus miles. The bike can do it! With decent pavement tires it can really corner too. So .. blah.. blah.. I love it. Later,

Since I don't like to take my eyes off the road ahead if I can avoid it, I always do a thumb check of the turn signal rocker switch. You can just feel it to make sure its in the center position (off). Its one of my regular periodic checks I do as I'm riding. I'm too busy looking ahead, rear, & around to look at the instrument cluster. -Brian Shepard A13 -----Original Message----- From: D.J. Cheers, D. GBG eh14 PS. I have 10100 Km on my stock tires and the rear is pretty much toast. That works out to about 6300 miles or so. The front is about 1/2 worn.
