unleaded gas or not??

Thanks everyone for the the replies to my waterpump problem, that was a big help. I have one more pickle if any one could help. My klr650 is an 87, I bought here in portugal used. I do not know if is of european specs or not. It looks exactly like any other KLR ive seen and as far as I can tell it is not any different from my 93 KLR650. BUT, it has the speedo on in kilometers. When I bought it the guy said it took leaded gas not unleaded. Can this be right? Is there a way I can find out for sure which gas it uses? It seems to run ok with the Leaded fuel but I dont want to chance it in the long run if this will be bad for it. Thanks all. Timan (you can see it at http://www.homestead.com/timan7725/index.html
