side panel melted, was "yikes!!!!"

Post by D.J. Rogers » Sat Aug 19, 2000 10:29 am

Joe, I just got back from a 3 week trip, again, the right side panel was melted through and the Kawi bag was scorched. I opted for the peice of junk Kawi calls a guard to keep the bag away from the muffler, but of course it didn't work. Anyway, what I would like to know is if you got the bags replaced, as well as the side panel, under warranty. the "heat sheild" on my bag has a large peice of green plastic melted into it now. My view is that both items were damaged as a result of Kawi's poor design, even with the use of their guard. I was at Happy Trails a couple of days ago on my way through. I guess I should have bought the side racks, because I can see this is going to be a reoccurring problem. Cheers, D. GBG eh14

A suggestion on keeping your side panels and bags from melting would be to move the bags forward and not to run the buckling strap through the grab rails. Works for me, although mine have many miles on them and are beginning to suffer from the heat, with a hole burned in one side. But I never expected them to last forever, so the 18000 and some-odd miles I've gotten from them at this time seems OK to me.

Yup,Pete I also like Harleys. I've still got a couple from a few years back (before they became so dog-gone trendy). I don't seem to ever get rid of the bikes that I really like. 8^) Don't ride them much any more.8-( The new breed of Harley rider kind of sucked a lot of the fun out of "Riding a Harley". I guess I'm a bit of a Contrarian. That's probably part of the reason that I enjoy my KLR so much. But,as you said,Harley Davidson doesn't have any monopoly on jerks. As for the poor fellow with the VFR! If I came upon a large sign telling me that I wasn't wanted,I would sure as hell consider parking somewhere, unless I was prepared for the consequences! You have to use a little common sense. You don't go prodding a bear! And that's all I have to say about that. Bizzarro Bikers-LOL They are contrarians to!
