Another anecdote for the record. A friend was riding his VFR750 on Vancouver Island and stopped for a break at a roadside hostelry. A large sign painted in the parking lot proclaimed that 'Jap scrap' was not welcome, but my friend figured that it was a free world etc etc etc. When he emerged from his break he found his bike lying on it's side, having been pushed off and over the side stand, with a group of grinning stereotypical cruiser riders watching on. Several hundred dollars worth of damage was done to the plastic and an intermittent fault with the side stand engine cut out switch resulted. So what can you do? Hopefully instances like this are rare, but I still cannot get over the fact that certain segments of our sport seem to go out of their way to fit negative stereotypes. Such a pity. Gromit A13

i'd venture to say the majority of folks on this list (and off) who've brought their bikes to the shop for valve adjustments are in the same situation, ie their valves haven't been adjusted either. i suppose you could break into his garage one night and check the valve clearances yourself. just cuss quietly... _pete -----Original Message----- From: Ric Merry [mailto:ric@...] Sent: Sunday, August 20, 2000 4:49 PM To: KLR group Subject: [DSN_klr650] good buy ??? Hi all. Ric here, new subscriber. I'm looking at a '93 KLR with 14,700 miles. Has Givi trunk and side racks, Acerbis hand protectors, new tires, K&N filter, new sprockets, Progressive springs, and SS brake line. Seller wants $2100 ! I'm just about ready to buy this when I ask him about last valve service and he says "Never" (he's second owner). Engine sounds good (as it would if valves were too tight eh ?) Wisdom of the group on this issue would be greatly appreciated.
