[dsn_klr650] front sprocket nut-now it can be told

that's just about how i did it, but with the four or five foot breaker bar and not the torque-multiplier-thingy. just sat on the bike, held the brakes and turned and she popped right loose. _pete -----Original Message----- From: Walter Lesnowich [mailto:lesnowich@...] Sent: Thursday, August 17, 2000 4:50 PM To: DSN_klr650@egroups.com Subject: [DSN_klr650] Front Sprocket Nut-Now it can be Told After hearing all the stories of listers drawing blood and popping their nuts and even the motormonkeys (dealer mechanics) struggling and being unsuccessful with air guns overpowered with 150 p.s.i trying to loosen the newer style front sprocket nut I was a little apprehensive of putting on my 16T sprocket that I got from Fred last year. I planned on waiting till I had 3,000 miles on the bike before putting it on so as to allow full break in of the clutch so I didn't attempt it till now. It was a piece of cake. Sitting on the bike with the side stand down and in neutral with my foot on the brake pedal I used my left foot to push on an 18 inch breaker bar. It took very little effort since I was aided by a 4 to 1 torque multiplier I bought from Snap-On 18 years ago to use on stubborn rear end pinion nuts. (I used to rebuild allot of rears, sometimes 15 to 20 a week.) It is rated at 1000 ft. lb.. and was very expensive costing $250 back then so I don't really recommend getting one to do this job but since 18" X 4 = 6' (it was so easy to do by myself) all you really need is a 4 ft pipe over the breaker bar and a friend holding the brake pedal while you turn it. (The friend is just to be safe as I don't want to promote acrobatics.) Walt A14 Visit the KLR650 archives at http://www.listquest.com/lq/search.html?ln=klr650 Support Dual Sport News... dsneditor@...
