cost of rebuilding engine - or, used from junk yard
Hello:
After reading the recent engine rebuild story (great story) from
Krgrife@... it peaked my interests in the costs involved.
Of course there are both direct costs (parts, machine shop, labor)
etc.. and also indirect (your time). I wonder if the person doing the
rebuild considered the idea of simply searching the nationwide bike
junkyards to purchase a low mileage KLR engine and just slap it in
there? Although there aren't a lot of KLR's around there MUST be
some in a junkyard of recent vintage.
I'm a part-time motorcycle roadracer using a F3. When the engine gets
tired it's usually cheaper to just go to a sport bike junkyard and
purchase a late-model (say 98) F3 motor and put my carbs and stuff on
it and push it into the bike. If you decice to have a shop rebuild your
existing motor it will generally cost the same or more, and one must
then go through the process of breaking in the new engine. A good,
very low mileage 98 F3 engine is about $1100-1400 depending on
mileage. A decent rebuild job can easily exceed this.

project has proceeded slowly but is now in the final stages. My damaged
left side engine case has been welded up and is again serviceable. I
have gathered all the parts to redo the balancer system, thanks to Steve
Pye who shipped me good used parts and a new balancer chain which he
purchased for me in Canada (snip)

[dsn_klr650] klr650 engine longevity
i bet it depends on how it's ridden. if you ride mostly offroad, it takes
alot more engine revolutions to go 30k miles. anyway, it better last longer
than that. i'll have 30k on my a14 by the end of next year and if i don't
pay off the loan early, i'll still have 3 yrs of payments left!! (of course
i'm paying it off this fall so my wife will let me buy a klx300).
i do think that someone smart (elden carl maybe) recommends replacing one of
the engine chains (cam or balancer, don't remember which) at around 30k, but
i'd be shocked if my engine wasn't still turning over at 100k or so.
