Kurt: Just bought a '99 KLR (an A-13 I believe) that had similar spotting or fading on ALL the plastic parts. Don't what caused this, as the bike is nearly new. My guess is some very harsh cleaner of some kind. Could the sun have done this to one this new? Anyone had similar a experience? Anyway, this is how I fixed it: I rubbed all the plastic thoroughly with a mild rubbing compound (the kind you use to remove minor scratches and scuffs from clearcoat). This seemed to break the haze or film that was causing the mottling. This process took away some of it. Then I took regular car paste wax and a sponge and rubbed VERY hard until the sponge 'bit' well into the plastic, and I was starting to get blue coloring on the sponge. Buffing with a clean towel brought the plastic back to looking new. BTW, I'm new to the list, and am finding answers to all my questions so far. My first impression of the KLR is that it is very smooth, contrary to some reports here. My frame of reference is the Honda CBX, 3 of which I've put on 75,000 miles. Trust me, my KLR is smooth, with almost no vibration in the grips, even without gloves. I sold one of my CBXs to buy the KLR, and so far I have no regrets. If the fading is just due to age or sun, ArmorAll or the equivalent (I use the STP stuff in the yellow bottle with the stupid name) will put some shine back and brighten the color a bit. If the plastic is actually abraded, you will probably have to buff it smooth before you can get it looking good again. Dreas

I've used Pledge Glass and Plastic furniture polish that seems to work just fine for my A14 so far.  Plus it gives that nice silk feel to the plastic and keeps it resisting many environmental tortures.  Works nice on the tank as well.   Chuck

To me it looks like the plastic is loosing it's nutrients that cause the shine and color to come out.  Here is what I got a wad of steel wool, 3 or 4 grades of sandpaper, paper towel and the Bottle of "STUFF."  I followed the directions by sanding the surface from course to smooth sandpaper then using the steel wool to get the fine scratches out.  Then I applied the "STUFF" in the bottle.  The "stuff" smelled kinda familiar to me. I kept thinking then it hit me. It was NON-BUFFING FLOOR WAX!!!!! just like I used when I was an Airman to buff floors.  Well, I went back to the shop I bought it from and they did take it back and refunded my $$$.  Now I have a front fender w/floor wax on it. YUCK If someone has a better idea of how to polish plastic let the secret out.  O'yeah I tried PLEXUS POLISH and that did not work.  Silicone Spray in a can seems to work the best so far. lead content of gas

Listers, I think were on two different topics here. Octane rating has NOTHING to do with lead content. Personally, I would not use above 91 ROM method in a KLR. Too high of a octane and you will burn up the piston. I had a friend that bought avaition gas for use in his BMW/GS acheiving total meltdown. Skip F. any comments? Aren't you supposed to grind up old pencils and put the shaving in your gas tank for increasing the lead content? Twistin, BMWzzzing
