wd40?

Post by dan shaw » Thu Jul 27, 2000 4:58 pm

im not sure WD40 is the best for lubing a chain. from my bicycling days, we were always told that wd40 should not be used to lube chains because it isnt a lubricant. its a solvent as far as i know and most of it evaporates away. its good for cleaning stuff and loosening frozen parts, but i dont even think it says on the can that it lubricats. i could be wrong on this one, but i just use lub specifically for motorcycle chains, and this stuff is alot different then wd40.... dan --- John Huber wrote:

[dsn_klr650] wd40?

Post by Chris Rivers » Thu Jul 27, 2000 9:51 pm

If anyone cares, WD40 was developed during the Apollo space program, they needed something to keep moisture off of the electrical circuits in the spacecraft. The chemists in charge of this went through 39 formulas until they got it right on the 40th try, ergo, Water Displacement 40, WD40. As it was being tested, the chemists noted the formulas added benefit of providing lubrication. As word got around, people started stealing the stuff to take home with them, the rest, as is said, is history. Renn A15
