Just checking in and seeing if anyone's out there. I'll be heading out there this weekend for the Brian Deneke Memorial Concert. Look for the guy with the Y2KLR with his nose pierced, and you'll proably have your man. Chris Astier

help needed with fan motor/ coolant level

Post by Jim Hyman » Thu Jul 27, 2000 9:40 pm

Robb, There is a separate cooling fan fuse located on the right side under the front gas tank cowl, next to the coolant recovery tank. Check this fuse first by using a continuity light, grounded at one end & test both ends of the fuse, even if the fuse looks good. If a new fuse doesn't fix the problem, disconnect the red/white wire that goes from the cooling fan (straight down) to the fan switch located at the bottom radiator tank (at the rear). This wire is covered in a black plastic protective sheath. If you run a wire from the disconnected wire end to an engine ground, your fan should turn on, even with the ignition key off. If this hot wire works, you probably have a defective fan switch. I won't go into the cooling fan relay, it's probably ok. Concentrate on the fan fuse & switch, making sure that you reconnected all wires. The KLR website http://www.geocities.com/~klrdsn/ has an article that deals with installing a manual override switch. The owner's manual explains how to properly check & maintain the coolant level. I'd suggest following Toby's advice & get Fred's replacement fan (about $35) and not letting Mr. Murphy strike at the most inopportune time, in the most inconvenient place.
