I have Metzelers on my 600. ME33 Lazer on the front and ME55A on the back in standard sizes. They stick nicely and slide gently. They've lasted well so far, but if you are carrying a heavy load you could check if you can get a ME55 in the stock rear size. I think the ME55A is a typical crossply and the ME55 is a belted crossply for heavier bikes. The ME33 Lazer seems to be the front street tyre of choice among traillie-mounted couriers here in my city. Mister_T> Wanted to know what would be the 'best' street tires for > my KLR. I liked the Michelin 'Sirac'. Lasted almost twice as long as the OEM tires on my friends bike. Improved handling over stock as well. It's described as an 80% street,20% dirt tire. I did a lot of my riding on rough gravel and the tires held up for over 8000 kilos. Steve Pye>Hello folks, > Wanted to know what would be the 'best' street tires for >my KLR. A friend of mine put these tires on his
1999 KLR,
The high speed wobble was gone and the tires stuck like glue, I am sure i
could drag a foot peg with these tires, I do not no about tire life, but thay
sure seemed to run hot. To the touch that is?

I have the gripster AM combo on my KLR and I really don't know how they're
going to improve on it. I have never lost the rear on it (even while doing
really stupid unmentionable things on it) and it holds its own against the
OEM Dunlops in the backcountry. I made a run on Skyline Drive where I was
peg dragging through switchbacks and wore the tires to about 1/8" of the
edge... Like I said, never slipped, never gave a hint of letting go, just
grip, grip, grip. The tires were on the bike when I purchased it, so I have
no idea what the life is on them, but I have put about 1,200 miles on the
bike and detected no wear on the tires. I figure they probably had about
1,000 miles on them when I bought the bike.
I like them a lot, and would whole heartedly recommend them to any who
wants a street tire. I know it is not a pure street tire, but the whole
genius of the KLR is one day you'll be riding a piece of slab and you'll see
a dirt road off of it leading into the wilderness, and you'll take it.
Regardless of what you'll think you'll be riding, you have to be ready to
ride pretty much anything on the KLR.

I'm running the Avon gripsters (a33 radials) on my t4 tiger (can I say that
in here?)and have been satisfied with their performance.
They may be too street oriented for the true d/s crowd. My main mission was
improved wet weather traction and better tire
wear. So far so good at 3500 miles! Now the plan is to add a KLR to the
stable for trail fun and to replace the xr650 I traded.
Any recommendations....do's and don't appreciated...

ear drum perforation!
I'm not sure how many KLR riders use ear plugs but here is a warning! This week-end I was gearing up for a "Day Ride" and my routine is to use ear plugs! I was inserting a "bullet" shaped foam ear plugs when I felt a "small" slight , sharp pain as I inserted a plug. I noticed no problem till later after the ride. I have at least 75% hearing loss in the "pain" ear. I assume I perforated the tympanic membrane with increased air pressure while inserting the foam plug! I have researched the problem on the internet and the most optimistic results is spontaneous healing in several weeks. The most dire result is surgery! I have an ENT appointment this week to confirm my diagnosis. I will pass on the final diagnosis.
The bottom line is, be carefull when inserting ear plugs!
