[dsn_klr650] nklr be careful out there folks

Post by Jim Cunningham » Wed Jul 19, 2000 11:59 am

Sad to say, but if you are camping/hiking in Grizzly country you are better off to carry a gun; and a big gun at that! I always carry a short barrel 3" mag chambered 12 gauge pump with 000 buckshot. Never had to use it but is "comforting" And for those of you who would feed wild animals, know that not only do you reduce their fear of humans (with all the bad things that come with that) but you reduce their chances of survival when the handouts are not there! -----Original Message----- From: Rob MacLeod [mailto:rob@...] Sent: Wednesday, July 19, 2000 10:51 AM To: DSN_klr650@egroups.com Subject: [DSN_klr650] NKLR Be careful out there folks I just heard that a man was 'partially consumed' by a grizzly bear in Hyder, Alaska on the weekend. He was camped in a tent in his back yard! Also, a young woman was stalked and cornered by a cougar at Tatla Lake in the West Chilcotin area of BC. The cougar was scared off before any harm could come to the woman. A few weeks ago a man was eaten by wolves (the first recorded wolf attack on a human in BC, maybe even all of North America) while he slept on a beach near Tofino on Vancouver Island. It seems people were feeding the wolves and they lost part of their fear of humans (??) so the man sleeping on the beach was an inviting snack. Get out there and see the wilderness while you can, but be smart. Rob ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Life's too short to send boring email. Due to our gun laws in Canada, all we have to protect ourselves is a can of bear spray! As for this grizzly in Hyder. This bear was traped a couple of days before but escaped. Due to goverment cut backs, the officers could not respond in time to desroy the bear the first time. Cheers. Last night I slowly paged through my American Motorcyclist mag and I saw no mention of "Ride to Work Day". You'd think the AMA would make a big deal out of it; go figure. Mark B2 A2
