balancer chain adjust

Post by Karl Raupp » Wed Jul 12, 2000 9:21 pm

Shortly after getting back from my trip, I noticed my bike was making a clunking noise, that I only noticed at lower RPM's. That's not to say it wasn't happening at higher speeds, just I may not be able to have heard it over the other noises. It was coming from the engine but sounded like it was coming from different areas each time - down low, up top. It was driving me nuts trying to track it down. I was thinking chain/sprocket, or top end bearing, cracked frame, but I just couldn't isolate it. The bike ran fine, I just noticed the clunk as I was accelerating from a stop. Well, last sunday I did an oil change and when I went to do the balancer chain bolt loosen and then tighten thing, it was already loose! DUH! So it makes sense that's where the noise was coming from, since after tightening it the noise has disappered. I don't totally understand this system to my question is what is the possibility I did damage the the balancer system or chain? Was the noise a loose (meaning beyond spec, I can't see it being so loose it'd be flopping away in there) chain hitting something? Any idea's? Thanks!
