[dsn_klr650] electrex stator problems

Post by Dash Weeks » Tue Jul 11, 2000 4:44 pm

Hi Nick, Ritzo probably should have told you to upgrade the rectifier/regulator at the same time. They have a direct replacement for the KLR. I have both the stator and rec/reg on my bike. I was not happy with the stator that came, as no instructions were included, they need to include a 6 pin connector to mate to our harness and the stock bolts for the cover are not quite long enough (35-40mm, is a good length), the bolts should also be button head cap screws rather than socket head cap screws, as the heads will hit the magneto stem. I haven't been able to do adequate testing on the system as other bugs are taking priority, but so far... I'm not 100% impressed. My battery was going dead too, but I attributed that to a few months of abuse, OTOH when running at idle the new stator wasn't putting out enough to even run my 55 Watt lowbeam, I measured 10.6 volts at idle with low beam on. NOT GOOD. The next day I was on the mountain pavement for about 90 minutes each way and at 5000-5500 RPMs my battery did seem to improve a bit, I didn't take a voltage measurement on the road though. I have two KLRs to check against, one (Daryl's) with a stock electrical system and Mine with the new stuff in it. Hopefully soon I'll get around to doing a complete comparison.
