handlebar lead cord

Post by Robert Johnson » Mon Jul 10, 2000 10:38 am

I posted a shot of the excess that I had in the picture gallery under Roberts pic. I used tubing from Lowes that was 5/8" outside diameter and 1/2" inside. It cost about $3 for a ten foot roll. I used about 3.5', cut it long so you can trim to a tight fit. From there I filled with large fishing splitshot that was a little less than 1/2" diameter, but you could use smaller just takes more. Once full I plugged one end with a little silicone and left the other end open for cutting. I was replacing factory grips so there were no grips on bar. The lead filled plastic tubing slid right into the open end of the handlebars, I didnt have to lube the inside of bar but others might apply a little slick something to make easier. Once I had fed tubing through to the other side I cut off at handlebar end and sealed this end with silicone. At this point the whole length can be removed and re inserted rather easily if you do not like results. It made a real differance in mine the lead dampened the inherrant vibration of the 650. I then installed new grips, if you are not putting on new grips one could cut a hole in the end and install tube then fill end with a little more silicone to keep water out. Robert
