Check back in 10-15 years, and maybe we can tell you then.

I have a well maintained Tengai with 27K miles that runs almost as new.
I also have an abused, Jersey Shore sand-thrashed, Pennsylvania
rock-beaten '88 KLR with almost 43K miles and it still runs very
well, although it consumes oil past the rings.
I think 60K is a reasonable expectation, and a pampered one could go 100K.

At 44,000 miles, I have not so much as had to pull the carburettor float
bowl off bcause of engine trouble. Two valve adjustments, one unremarkable
inspection of the counterbalancer mech and a varierty of minor electrical tweaks
and mods and thats about it. Stay on top of maintnence and it should do
indefintaly. I know of one bottom end that is still going at over 100,00 miles.

Keep revs under 5500 when running at a constant speed, use a good synthetic oil, change it every 3K - 4K, should get 60K - 100K minimum.
Russel'r <- simply an opinion based on what I have read on this list

Tell me he is wrong because I would much rather run synthetic!

I've been running Mobil 1 15w-50 for 1000 miles and haven't felt a slip yet,
but maybe I need to go to night school at Kawi High...
It's even the dreaded tri-synthetic blend.

My mechanic said it will last forever if I take really good care of it and
change the oil
every 3000 miles.

I am curious as to how many miles people have gotten out of their KLR
engines? What kind of miles can someone expect out of a well maintained KLR?

I was riding to work this morning and just about there. There is a ramp
that merges at a relatively steep angle into downtown (the ramp merges into
its own lane) and I was on my way up. I try to keep myself between the cars
as I'm merging and look at the people's heads as they drive. It's common for
folks to change into the new right lane as soon as it appears regardless of
the solid white line separating them. The little old lady in the Buick had
dark sunglasses with side blinders so I was certain she didn't see me. What
I didn't expect was that when she cut me off she would also hit her brakes.
Yikes! There is a 6 inch curb so that was not an exit. All I could do was
pray and grab brakes. Missed her by about 3 feet. She never saw me at all.
When my Darien arrives I'll be accentuating it with more tape and I like the
idea of rim tape for night time riding. I'll also be getting a louder horn
but the fact remains that while some folks just don't see bikers, there are
others who just don't see ANYONE. Hence all the fender benders.
Drive ahead... Concentrate...
