G'Day.
I yanked my shifter off tonight to move it down a spline and make it
a bit more comfortable. Now, I've read most of the posts about this
thing, and how some think it was made from a chunk of cheese and I
tell ya, they aren't that far off.
The weld on the back of my lever is no more than a spot weld, and
doesn't even go all the way across the joint! No bloody wonder these
things fail all the time. I've only dumped my bike once, and when I
did I was able to bend the lever (carefully) back into place. After
looking at the shifter, I can imagine that it wouldn't take much more
than this to bust it for good.
I called a buddy of mine and asked if he could reinforce it for me.
I'm going to ride the beast in to work tomorrow, yank the shifter and
walk it over to his shop and see what we can do about building it up
a bit. If we come up with anything interesting, I'll take some
photos and post them here for anyone else to try. Failing this, I
think I'll be pro-active and shop for a new shift lever now before I
need one. The bike is still under warranty, but there's no point in
replacing junk with junk.
Cheers,
D.
