My suggestion would be to get him a 4 stroke like a Z50 or a XR70. The Hondas
seem basically indestructible and require very little maintenance. I bought
my 7 year old a Z50 this year and its perfect for him. I kinda figured that I
would get him the smaller bike for his first year of riding then upgrade him
next year or when he's ready for more power and gears. I priced the used
market and it seems that the beginner bikes seem to hold there value very
well so come upgrade time you will be out little or nothing on the original
purchase. Dave

My son's first bike was a JR50 and is very reliable; my daughter will be learning on it next. John has sice moved up to a KTM sxr50. This bike is a real performer, and he's tearing up the yard nicely. However, it's a tad finicky. I found that leaner is better and went way down in the jet size. Also, I can only run 100% synthetic oil in it or it will foul the plug in a couple hours of running. A hotter plug can help too, but I'd never go more than one step hotter in the range. John has an old xr75 on deck which is a 4-stroke. Mark B2 A2>So, what are the list's recommendations for a bike for a young boy who is >probably about to hit a growth spurt? If buying used look very close for lack of maintance as this causes more headaches then a well-maintained bike that is ridden hard. Good used small bikes hold high resale but if you're patient good deals will come your way. Never had any luck finding them at dealers as they have long waiting list of people and get top dollar. Pass the word to all your riding buddies and don't be surprised if one of them finds one for you. In my experience all bikers love to help each other in this reguard. I think it has something to do with getting to look but not having to spend the money! Good Luck, Joe Alberth

Kurt-
Hmmm. Small peoples bikes.......
On one hand, its likely the son will only ever rarely see two strokes in his
time, on the other hand, early to mid 70's two strokes weren't so temperamental,
they were more fun, just as dependable, and more desireable than four strokes
in their time, with just as much torque, and more zip.
Since two strokes fire twice as often as four strokes the should be easier
to
start, but for the same reason the top ends don't last as long. When Yamaha
was no. 1, they didn't mix gas, nor did they have reed valves......they had
autolube(mixing gas automatically), and they had dual shock(an essential for
demanding the rider to learn good technique.
The early Yamaha Mini Enduros(50cc, and 80cc) were wonderful. Today
I've seen em' for used for $250. Like the DT/CT series, they started every
first kick, had great low end, got good mileage, and mixed oil n' gas for you.
The Kaws/ Suz's in that time ran, but had overheat problems. The Honda
50cc/70cc were 4 stroke and bullet proof. Don't get a 90cc, handling quirks.
As two strokers entered the 80's with single shocks, and required you mix,
they got quirky, with shorter power bands, mx trannies, and went to shit.

I may make the trip from PGH but sort of unlikley. If I do I will be
traveling west on 30. Lets try to touch base closer to the event. We had
two great days there last year. The Haydens really put on a show.

I am currently planning to be there but just might ride up for the day. I
might also try to go to Michigan to the BMWMOA rally and just come back
through
to MidOH. Keep me posted on plans.
