I just about split my sides with laughter when I tried to picture a Japanese
person trying to ride a KLR650. What do they use, hydraulic boots or hidden
hydraulic bike supports that deploy everytime they stop? I know there are
some taller Japanese nationals, but I also know that most of them would need
a ladder to get up on a bike like the KLR. Everyone has there own ideas for
chain tension. Dirt bike riders do it one way, road riders do it another. We
DS riders are caught in quandary because we are in-between. I am quite aware
that engineers are not perfect, after all engineers are people too. However,
I believe that if there had been a major problem with Kawasaki's procedure,
they would have corrected it by now.
When I tighten my chain, I do it the Kawasaki way. Then I have my wife
measure the play distance with me on the bike. I have always followed the
mfg.'s chain tightening instructions and I typically get between 15,000 to
25,000 miles on a stock chain. This has held true for bikes from 125cc to
1150cc. One thing that I do think needs to be kept in mind though, when you
change your shock setup, you need to adjust your chain as well. If you move
back and forth with the preload settings you will change the tension on your
chain. Take my wife's 82' Honda FT 500 Ascot for instance. When I ride it, I
have to change the preload settings on its dual progressive shocks. I also
have to loosen the chain when I do this. Needless to say, I don't ride it
very often, cuz its a pain, especially when I've got a properly setup KLR
sitting right next to it. Just my 3 cents.

bar backs
Hi All,
I had someone recommend a set of Bar Backs for me to cut
down
on backaches, but haven't been able to find anything with a quick
search of Dennis Kirk and JCWhitney. Anyone know where to find such
a
beast???
Thanks
Alex
