>One of my friends has an 1150GS and another has a KTM Adventure. The >GS rider has always maintained that with the proper tires they would >be comparable. Last week they "explored" some back roads that were >pretty tough. The GS dumped in the road 5 times and finally piched >off the side down an 8ft. drop off. The KTM never was challenged. > >Was it the bikes or was it the riders? It was both. There are people >who could ride a Ducatti on the White Rim trail. Pick any off road >terain. Put the same rider on a GS and then on the Adventure (or the >KLR) and I'm certain he/she will ride better and more comfortably on >the smaller bike.
Pulpit mode on... Agreed, but lets look at the bikes compared, apples and oranges. Why would anyone think a GS and the KTM Adv. would even compare? Read: 1150GS Heavy road work, light dirt. KTM: Adv. Heavy dirt work, light road. BMW would out perform on touring, but the KTM would (does) dominate on anything less "civilized". Of course there are those riders that can do anything on anything, but bikes are designed to excel at specific tasks. Malcom Smith could not have done so well off road with a 900RR, but better than I! Pulpit mode off... --- Rev. >I was just responding to the assertion that we might need to >reconsider the GS as a Dual Sport bike because someone rode it around >White Rim. It is a good tourer, but it is a pig with too steep of a >head angle and too small of a front tire to be anything but scarry on >the dirt. I'm sure Malcom Smith could ride a Gold Wing around White >Rim. I still wouldn't consider it a Dual Sporter.
R1150GS is an excellent motorcycle but calling it a dualsport is a stretch for sure. Drop it on a sidehill and see what the folks call it (the ones huffing) I doubt the name "dualsport" comes up.
