[dsn_klr650] 87 klr 650 - should i buy?
Yes, condition is more important than year, but I'd pay no more than
$1,100 for it, and that's a bit of a stretch.

Hopefully that's not a "dirt nap" from which you will never get up. [dsn_klr650] 87 klr 650 - should i buy?
Reply to: RE: [DSN_klr650] 87 KLR 650 - Should I Buy? interesting questions. i just bought an 87 from an old friend. it had 2700 miles on it and was in excellent cosmetic shape. mechanicaly, it was as sound as can be and i, like you, went into it thinking that the bike has a lot of life left in it. the bike was maintained by the owner's brother who is a vintage mxer and owns about twenty bikes. he's more than competent. the other thing that was cool was that the owner had all the original ads and brochures on the a1 tucked into a nice folder. that said a lot to me about how much he cared for the bike.
if your bike does have low mileage, make sure it hasn't just been sitting around rotting. it should have been stored properly using some fuel stabilizer, keeping the tires off the ground, etc. i found that the tank in mine was a bit rusty inside and bought an ims 5.5 gallon replacement for $200. i also had all the cables replaced. maybe not necessary, but 13 year old cables, regardless of mileage, could be a bit tired. i also replaced the tires and tubes for the same reason.
i paid 1700 and thought that was a bit high - at least according to kbb.com and nada.com - but i figured 1700 bucks for a bike that could be fun for a long, long time was a pretty good deal. plus, it's kinda cool to have an a1.
good luck.

[dsn_klr650] 87 klr 650 - should i buy?
Gotta go with Mark,
Search around. I thought I got a cherry at $1400 (A2), well kept but
things were getting tired. Clutch Springs needed replacing, Balancer chain
will need replacing as I am running out of adjustment. The swing arm and
linkage knuckle will probably need some attention and you can't tell until
you get it apart. Stock shock may be tired and need some help as
well. Yeah a few things I knew before I bought it, but I didn't notice
some things while my eyes were starry. For example the mech. seal on the
H20 pump was bad and my oil was a pretty green. There's a lot to consider,
but two well maintained machines side by side with only the year being
different, I'd think hard about spending the extra $ in hind sight. Then
again, even if I did buy the newer one, I'd still upgrade nearly everything
anyway, so I have no regrets about the older machine. She'll be brand new
soon.
My buddy got a '97 with no abuse at all with 3400 miles for $3K, the guy
wanted to downgrade to a Harley, never off road (whatta waste). Fred just
got a big order from my bud (not to mention my "ahem", paychecks).... Per
my instructions.... Sure Fred, no problem, I've enjoyed your service and am
happy to pass along your good name... You have my address for that T-Shirt
Right?
Keep searching is my advise. You'll find the perfect match soon
enough. That one for the $ isn't it IMHO.
Good choice looking at KLRs though. I've had more smiles in a dog house
than ever before in my life.
