Attachments :Great trip report,
I was in Gerlach a month ago and the lake bed was too wet to ride. You
mentioned the cost of the motel room being high. When I inquired at the bar
about the rooms I was quoted two differ prices. When I asked what the
difference was, the room clerk/bartender said one had color TV and the
lesser room $26 had B&W. I went with the B&W!
It rained the night I was there but I was determined to find some dirt
roads. On my way back to Reno loaded up not a mile from Gerlach I exited the
hard surface onto what looked like a hard surface sand road. I got about 200
yards when for some reason I popped the throttle. in a bit of enthusiasm and
my bike and I went down instantaneously. I never saw it coming. The "wet
hard sand" turned out to be gumbo clay, slick as "owl snot"! It was no small
feat trying to stand up to right the bike in that slippery gumbo. Lesson
learned; ride carfully in the desert after a rain even though it looks OK!
I am sending a photo of my mishap. The road was hard packed with a slippery
top layer. I hope the photo comes through.
