I reckon that this method (with the right arm) would be fine if you lived in England, drove on the left hand side of the road, and your steering wheel in your car is on the right hand side of the car. But... Hand signals aren't just for motorcyclists. They are for car drivers as well and were invented before the advent of turn signals and brake lights. You had to stick your hand out the window for this to work right..... JeffQuick question for the group (mostly the canadian members): I've always signalled a right-hand turn by sticking my right arm straight out to the right. Left turns were always with the right arm bent at the elbow, with the hand up. Braking is the same with the hand down. Guess what?! That's WRONG, apparently. Right turns are what I was signalling as left turns, and vice versa. Since when does a right arm sticking straight out not mean a right turn, and who's educating the public on this? Arne, oh traffic-copness, please enlighten me! Tim Ryce A9

When in Rome, do as the Romans do: Right hand drive cars, use your right arm. Left hand drive cars, use your left arm. Motorcycles, remember what country you are in. Bicycles, use the sidewalk and avoid the car and motorcycle drivers that have no idea how to hand signal...:^) --- Rev. That is against the law in my state. Bicycles must obey all the regulations that apply to motorized traffic, including not driving on sidewalks. Its a shame that the cagers don't know this though, as they always try to crowd you off the lane in traffic. Jeff> ---

I ride my bicycle to work every day as I choose not to own a car; and I'm
NOT an environmentalist. I live in the city of Philadelphia and like most
Northeastern cities in the US, you're crazy to own a car or even drive one
in these cities. I'm sure dat Brooklyn bum would agree. Just try riding your
bicycle in the city streets. You won't last a week. If you're not killed,
you'll be seriously injured. I ride side streets or side walks. The police
will look the other way because they know you'll be killed if you ride in
the streets. Most drivers in Philly are uninsured. Yes, more than 50% of
drivers don't have insurance and everyone knows it even the police. Its so
far out of control that Philly cops don't ask for your insurance when they
pull you over because they know that you probably don't and they don't want
to impound the car and all the paper work associated with it.
