running out of gas

Post by John Huber » Tue May 30, 2000 9:51 am

I just have a question.  Let me give some background.  I was riding the other day and the bike started to cough and sputter.  I cheched the tank, thinking it was a gas problem and found about a gallon of gas still in the tank.  I turned the petcock to reserve and it ran just fine.  Is this a common problem with ya'll?  Do ya'll have to change to reserve for the last gallon of gas in the tank?  Any info would be nice.
Thanks

One of our students came into the lab one day and asked me how to modify a part for his experiment. I suggested something, and he asked, "Is that guaranteed?" At which point I came up with the following: "The degree of the guarantee is proportional to the price of the advice." BTW, I was talking to one of our shop guys, and he remembers seeing someone at an OHV area who had taken a bike loading ramp, put wheels on it, and used it to tow his bike behind his Gold Wing to the OHV area! running out of gas

Conall, John, My A9 goes off 'main' onto 'reserve' at the 5 gallon mark. After 20-25 miles, the reserve goes dry. My soulution: 1) Dismount & lean your KLR way over to the left to transfer the gas trapped in the right side of the tank. 2) Ride until it goes dry agin (about 20 miles). 3) Repeat step #1 again. 4) Ride another 5-10 miles. 5) Hitch a ride to the nearest gas station! This technique uses all the gas in the tank. YMMV Professor A9 Federal Way, Wa. [USA] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ --- "Conall O'Brien" wrote:

running out of gas. Then it takes 5 gallons to fill it up again. So yes, you will hit reserve with a gallon to go and part of that gallon is unaccessible by normal means, it's trapped in the right hand side of the tank. My math may not be exact, but I think you get the picture. Skip has a fuel tank mod, I'll let someone else tell you about it.
