[dsn_klr650] shopping list

Post by Jeff Walker » Sat May 27, 2000 9:18 pm

Listers and Fred,

I'm trying to put together the parts list for my future operation on my scooter.  Fred, we've discussed this before, but I've long since lost that list.

I need to know the Eldon Carl part numbers and such for his counterbalancer/clutch upgrade, and I haven't been able to find them in the archives.

I'm also needing three special tools;  that special vice grip tool for holding the clutch in place, the bent magneto holder wrench, and the magneto flywheel puller.

I'm thinking a set of clutch springs, a set of piston rings, a set of valve seals, new retaining snap wrings for the piston pin, new seals for the valve cover bolts, set of helicoils for the valve cover bolts (might as well), and a complete set of gaskets and seals.  Can anyone think of anything I'm forgetting?  Like are there other things that are better replaced than reused while I have it apart?  I'm thinking that I'm going to be ok with my clutch plates and friction disks, but I won't know for sure until I measure them.  I'm hoping and praying that I can get away with just re-honing the cylinder and putting in some new piston rings, and I'm hoping that the valve to valve guide clearance is OK and I can just re-lap the valves into the seats.  Pretty big assumptions, I know, but I'm hoping for the best.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Jeff

[dsn_klr650] shopping list

Well sir, I'm trying to do this as cheaply as possibly, so I can afford to buy textbooks in the fall. I'm really hoping that the piston and cylinder are within tolerance. Otherwise I'll have to bore and buy an oversized piston. A Buick piston? How do you make that work? I think that the bottom end is in great shape, so I won't be replacing any bearings there, except maybe a new wrist pin on the piston end of the crank. I think Gino mentioned something about Eldon Carl doing something special with his crank, can someone clue me in? Jeff

Hi Mike, That's the problem, I mean solution - "Landed". Ever watch Steve McQueen in the Great Escape? Having never spent much time on the KLR, my advise might be slightly off, but I'd guess that topped out in 3rd gear should get you up to "escape velocity". Look for a grassy area with terrain that is slightly rolling, spin-a couple donuts, pick your spot, accelerate like your life depends on it, not too much wheel spin, get your rear off the seat, arms extended, weight back, and off you go..........watch out for the barbed wire on the landing! Good luck, Knot - free advise is worth what you pay for it - nothing.
