locktite info (nklr)

Post by D.J. Rogers » Fri May 19, 2000 4:09 pm

Just for everyone's info. If you do happen to use red Locktite instead of blue, it can be removed by heating the fastener with a heat gun or(carefully) a butane torch. The heat softens the Locktite and allows it to release. Do this BEFORE you damage the screw head trying to get it off. It will seem as though you are loosening a nyloc nut, so there will still be some resistance. We used to use red Locktite on aircraft components that had to come apart for overhaul, but were otherwise left undisturbed. If the previous tech used too much red they could be a pain, but for the most part the screws came out without much trouble. Cheers, D. GBG eh14

For my own clarification, when people refer to red versus blue Locktite, are they referring to the color of the tube, or the color of the substance inside?   Marcus Young

There is a dot or mark on the container which corresponds to the color of the contents. Most/all Locktite containers are red. Be sure to read the labels, as they state the uses for the different colors (I believe there is also a green version). Cheers, D. GBG eh14

Also I have found that red really only locks totally (they refer to the red as "stud locker)" if the parts are clean. If I have my red handy and need the characteristics of blue I will spray the threads with WD40 and then use the red and it comes apart without heat. Mark McCoy Marcus Young wrote:
