One can either save files or use a backup program and write to them in compressed format. It never hurts to have an uninterruptable power supply on your computer. Wouldn't you hate to have the power go out in the middle of a defrag or for all that matter any disk write? They have gotten cheap. Buy one. Everyone does defrag their computers on a regular basis?
