To the best of my knowledge (drawn almost entirely from this list the
main difference is an emissions thing which some say is a performance
robber and others don't. But this list can help you bypass those
systems if you find a bike you like at a price you like (say that 10
times fast) and it happens to be a Cali model. Mostly, as far as
bulletproof goes, the KLR is...just be sure to check all bolts and
fasteners as soon as you leave the dealer as they tend to forget the
pure vibrating power of the beast we call our own.
