[dsn_klr650] nklr: possible relocation to bay area
i'm in forestville (well actually, i'm at work, so i'm in petaluma) about 45
mins north of SF in light traffic.

registration is no problem. you don't have to do any emissions nonsense or
anything. just go to the dmv with your old title and register it. not sure
exactly what the fees are, but probably $50/yr or thereabouts. cal
registrations are partly a registration fee, and partly a valuation based
tax. klr's are pretty cheap, so we get over on that one. i checked into this
stuff a little because i just bought a 49state bike (with nevada title) for
my wife. there are no safety inspections or anything, which is sort of good
for me (less inconvenience) but sort of scary too, since other people's cars
aren't getting inspected. so far none of them have killed me.

there is some sort of riding in the way south bay, like hollister and some
other place with "creek" in the name i think, but i'm clueless about down
there. where i've been riding is cow mountain (near ukiah), about an hour
from my house, and about 2 hrs from SF, and also in the mendocino national
forest north of clear lake, probably 2.5-3 hrs from SF. lots of backcountry
and camping and cool stuff that i've only just begun to explore. some of the
singletrack is probably too difficult to do on anything but a serious
off-roader, like a beemer gs1150, but if you just stay on the easy trails,
 you'll still have a blast.

great riding can also be had in the sierra foothills, and up into the high
mountains. the tahoe and eldorado national forests have some bitchin' ohv
areas (forest hill and georgetown), and tons of dirt roads and jeep trails
too. i mostly know this area from mountain biking, but i plan to get up
there on the scooter this summer.

we're not very organized here yet, but i think we're on the verge of forming
an impromptu NorCal posse to do some riding. i'd suspect we might try to get
together in may sometime, depending on everyone's schedule.

 good luck on your interview.
