I think on the KLRs they are interchangeable, but on earlier bikes, I think there were clearance problems as the measurment from the outer side of each plate on an o-ring is great than that of a same size non-o-ring chain. I'm pretty sure this is the case on old Yamaha SR500s and XS650s which were equiped with non-oring chains from the factory. Gino
