I just downloaded CadIntosh, and seem to be getting along rather well with it. I don't know
how to use the "Layers" command. Is it available only after you register?

I'm used to ME10 with its "Parts" function.

Ray - not sure about that - it's been a loooong time, and several
CADintosh versions, since I registered. No doubt Thorsten can give
the definitive answer.

I do think that the layers system is not very intuitive, unlike (say)
ClarisDraw or OmniGraffle which do what I'd expect without a lot of
head-scratching. It took me a while to get what I wanted last time I
used layers. It did all seem to work OK once I figured it out,
though. However, I was trying to do something simple using layers
just the other day (using the latest release, CADintosh X v5.5.2) and
kept being frustrated by my inability to work out the sequence of
instructions to achieve what I thought should be very easy. I was in
a hurry, and so didn't look at the manual, but just did things
another way. Your query makes me now wonder if it's not just me being
stupid, but possibly a bug.

I don't have time to investigate today, but I'll try to check
properly, also open some older files and see if they work OK, then
report back here.

Ray - I did a very quick check on an older file and the layer stuff
in that is all OK in the current version of CADintosh. I also created
a new file and whatever I was doing before, it all seems to work OK
now. I did take a look at the manual - when all else fails, read the
instructions!

Hi Rowland,

Thanks for answering my post.

Maybe it's me not being used to using layers that could be the problem. ME10 was the
product name of Hewlett Packards 2-D Drawing package. The product was sold off to
CoCreate, which I believe is a german company. The 2-D package is now called Onepace

ME10 used a convention called "Parts" to isolate and manipulate a single part or group of
parts that lived within a larger assembly.

Ray - I forgot your original question when I last responded. Yes,
some useful aspects of the layer system (eg layer definition/naming,
and filtering) are disabled in the unregistered version.

You can move stuff between layers in 2 ways:

using the Layer menu, which affects everything on a layer;

or using the "apply layer" tool from the graphic tool item on the
tool palette, you can move individual entities.

Sorry to be so late with this - I've been a bit swamped with other
stuff in he last few weeks.
