I'm using a Gigabot myself, and as I print all
the BB8 parts, I've been thinking more about what parts
on the B9 could be 3d printed with good results. The cost of 3d printers and
filament is coming way down, and you can print thick pieces
out of PLA that can be sanded to a really smooth paintable
finish.
The claws seem the most obvious
candidate. Probably the wrists, too. The radar posts, chest
knob, torso hook also. The radar section possibly.
Actually, when I see people printing
the body panels of the BB8 in parts (I think it's about
23" diameter) I would say even a multi-part B9 torso is
a possibility. If I were to estimate, it would probably take
about 200 hours and $300 worth of plastic with today's
technology, so fiberglass is probably still the way to
go.
