I noticed that too! It is the Trendmasters/Diamond Select Edition!

I agree. This picture has always haunted me for some reason. It's so bizarre! Craig is absolutely correct. Plus you can tell by the stunt robot's brain which has Greg Jein"s modifications to it. I mean what's the story behind this photo? Who took it, where was it and when was it taken? Why are all those wires hanging out? And most odd, why is the stunt smoking like that? So weird!!!!  -Roy

This is an interesting picture no doubt, but it is absolutely not taken during production of the show. These are the "restored" robots probably taken in the late 80's or early 90's. Just look at the details (or lack there of).

There are some other odd things about this photo. Those are not the original Hero upper knee plates. I can't say I have ever seen those before. There also seems to me something off about the scale but I can't put my finger on it. It almost looks like the stunt robot seems to be floating several inches above the floor making it appear even taller than it really is compared to the Hero.

Never the less, a rare picture seeing  the two robots together!

I've had this photo forever, it's from a newspaper clipping. I've had it on my Flickr for a while and I'll link it here because it shows just a little bit more revealing that the hero is just a smidge closer to the camera affecting the height issue. While the stunt was always taller due to the solid fiberglass legs, in this photo it looks even taller.

Someone said this photo looks sad. Why's that? It's clear to me that the show is still in production during this photo. Isn't smoke coming out of one? I think it's a neat look behind the curtain and a rare look at both robots together, unless you count the few times they appeared on screen together.

What is hard to tell here, and is a credit to the crew, is that a lot of the stunt parts were made from cardboard, like the brain, and other light-weight materials. Some of you may recall that Fred Barton uploaded and detailed list of what was made from what before he destroye- I mean restored it.

If you look at our stunt friend on the new Blu-rays you can see how there is little to no difference in the color of the robots rubber parts and resign parts. They gave an overall silver sheen to the hero's legs for the final season so it made sense that the stunt, built for season three would also have a more overall silver appearance. Next time you watch season three notice how silver the stunt robots legs are. Nowhere near the black color that is sitting in the Seattle SciFi Museum :^)

Re: Original Hero and Long Distance Robot Side by Side

Post by Mike Handley » Fri Jan 22, 2016 4:21 am

I'm not convinced it's the hero at all, the straight claws, odd looking arm bellows, and the knee plates make it look like a fan built robot copied from the Trendmasters toy.

Maybe it's the Kevin Burns duplicate. It was known for its incorrect straight claws and incorrectly curved red ear sensor just like this one has. Maybe this picture was taken at Greg Jein"s workshop since he worked on both robots and at one time owned the stunt.             -Roy

I saw that picture a while back. The impression that I got from the smoke and wires, was that it was staged, for some reason, to look as if one robot had destroyed the other one.

Hello Builders:   Thanks for taken a look at this photo. I always wondered about this photo for a long time and all your input sure makes sense to me.   A sure good analysis all you gave. Just did not think that the long distance robot was so much bigger then the original hero if this was the original hero.   I remember when the original hero was on EBAY many years ago. I printed out the ad which I still have, just a description with no detailed photos. Just one of the cast with the robot.    I will see if I can post them. Have to make the pages to Jpegs first.   Thanks,   Victor B9-0082     -----Original Message-----

I think I got this photo from Flint probably in the late 80 s. He should definitely know the source.

Some good observations but let me dispel some. These are the stunt and hero, no question.  I believe this is way before the Kevin Burns dupe. I can t pinpoint what it is exactly but I can always tell when they use Kevin Burn's robot on toy or DVD packaging because it just doesn t look right.

The claws could always rotate all the way around, Bob just held them the way he did when he was in it. Many robot toys feature the claws that way. I know some manufactures were given access to the robot and the toys look the way they do because this is how they may have seen the robot with no one inside of it. As far as one of the robots floating, I mentioned in my post that one is slightly closer to the camera which I would think creates that floating and taller effect.

What I am enlightened by are Craig s comments about some of the details. My first thought is OK, it s not during the show s production and maybe was around the time of the Greg Jein era. I have pictures of the stunt in several diff states of restore from that period and can see that the stunt may look like Jein s restore .

However! when the hero was rescued (as the Mystery Island robot) and then restored, the original legs were never to be seen on the robot again. I don t know if they were wrecked by the Mystery Island alteration but I ve only ever seen (bad) duplicate legs on the hero after restoration. Azarian has a pair of legs on his web site but I don t know the source of them.

These are clearly the hero legs we know from the show, so that would date this photo before Jein s time and the Mystery Island time. It s also clear that the photo is from a newspaper (scanned from newsprint) so it s either press from the original show s time or it s from a Lisfan which puts us right back where we started.

Jinkies,I love a good mystery, hopefully Flint will chime in and let us know the true hollywood story.

I don't know about the rest of the robot but the tread sections are wrong. The wheel openings are square at the tops, the openings should have a small radius. Also the knee plate is one piece not two.

I remember years ago seeing the real hero legs auctioned off on eBay, but what I don't understand is when I saw the Mystery Island Robot in the 80's, the legs where from what I could see "The Original", so someone must have sold them. But the legs I saw on eBay looked very warped and old, like 60's old. I have also seen them on older photos where the Robot was displayed after he was purchased by K.B. The legs I saw and felt fro the Mystery Robot looked good and felt strong, but that could have been because the paint they used sealed the material like a cast. When I went to stretch out the arms, they were very, very stiff. Would just hang, but you could tell they were Original. Perhaps K.B. tried to remove the paint and the material then sagged. Then the copies where made???

These may be the restored K.B. and F.B. Robots side by side. The Island Robot got ride of the tread section and the parts above that didn't look too good either. Could have been a quick fix to show off the Robot until some better construction was available. Back in the 80's there weren't any parts or pattern's laying around.

Hmmm... This picture is indeed an enigma. I think I remember many years ago someone said this picture was taken when Greg Jein was restoring the original or creating the duplicate. I can't remember which. Greg had partially restored the stunt, restored the hero and built the duplicate. The brain on the stunt is for sure wearing Jein's alteration to it. He pretty much covered the brain with silver tape so it didn't have the Sharpie pen hieroglyphics look anymore and this pic shows that. Jein's hieroglyphics were much less taller and at a very straight line across. I'm still not convinced that's the hero. Mainly because the legs on the restored hero didn't look as good as on the duplicate. These legs look like the nicer duplicate legs. Also the hero didn't have the one piece upper knee plate. Quite franky I never noticed this before in the pic and never saw these on either the hero or the duplicate before. It's very strange. I'm pretty sure the hero had the bent claws and correct ear sensor curve even after the restoration. The claws in the pic are straight and the red ear sensor has the wrong curve as the duplicate did and still does as far as I know.  -Roy
