Hmmm... This picture is indeed an enigma. I think I remember many years ago someone said this picture was taken when Greg Jein was restoring the original or creating the duplicate. I can't remember which. Greg had partially restored the stunt, restored the hero and built the duplicate. The brain on the stunt is for sure wearing Jein's alteration to it. He pretty much covered the brain with silver tape so it didn't have the Sharpie pen hieroglyphics look anymore and this pic shows that. Jein's hieroglyphics were much less taller and at a very straight line across. I'm still not convinced that's the hero. Mainly because the legs on the restored hero didn't look as good as on the duplicate. These legs look like the nicer duplicate legs. Also the hero didn't have the one piece upper knee plate. Quite franky I never noticed this before in the pic and never saw these on either the hero or the duplicate before. It's very strange. I'm pretty sure the hero had the bent claws and correct ear sensor curve even after the restoration. The claws in the pic are straight and the red ear sensor has the wrong curve as the duplicate did and still does as far as I know. -Roy

I remember years ago seeing the real hero legs auctioned off on eBay, but what I don't understand is when I saw the Mystery Island Robot in the 80's, the legs where from what I could see "The Original", so someone must have sold them. But the legs I saw on eBay looked very warped and old, like 60's old. I have also seen them on older photos where the Robot was displayed after he was purchased by K.B. The legs I saw and felt fro the Mystery Robot looked good and felt strong, but that could have been because the paint they used sealed the material like a cast. When I went to stretch out the arms, they were very, very stiff. Would just hang, but you could tell they were Original. Perhaps K.B. tried to remove the paint and the material then sagged. Then the copies where made???

Some good observations but let me dispel some. These are the stunt and hero, no question. I believe this is way before the Kevin Burns dupe. I can t pinpoint what it is exactly but I can always tell when they use Kevin Burn's robot on toy or DVD packaging because it just doesn t look right.

The claws could always rotate all the way around, Bob just held them the way he did when he was in it. Many robot toys feature the claws that way. I know some manufactures were given access to the robot and the toys look the way they do because this is how they may have seen the robot with no one inside of it. As far as one of the robots floating, I mentioned in my post that one is slightly closer to the camera which I would think creates that floating and taller effect.

What I am enlightened by are Craig s comments about some of the details. My first thought is OK, it s not during the show s production and maybe was around the time of the Greg Jein era. I have pictures of the stunt in several diff states of restore from that period and can see that the stunt may look like Jein s restore .

However! when the hero was rescued (as the Mystery Island robot) and then restored, the original legs were never to be seen on the robot again. I don t know if they were wrecked by the Mystery Island alteration but I ve only ever seen (bad) duplicate legs on the hero after restoration. Azarian has a pair of legs on his web site but I don t know the source of them.

These are clearly the hero legs we know from the show, so that would date this photo before Jein s time and the Mystery Island time. It s also clear that the photo is from a newspaper (scanned from newsprint) so it s either press from the original show s time or it s from a Lisfan which puts us right back where we started.

Jinkies,I love a good mystery, hopefully Flint will chime in and let us know the true hollywood story.

Sorry guys for the multiple exact emails. I guess Yahoo mail was having issues so I kept sending because I did not see it go through.

Nothings ever sure anymore Roy, the only ones who know who is who are the owners. But this is what I was referring to with the leg plates. there was no tread section, so someone had to build a quick fix to get him exposed....? That's probably why his legs look that way in photo. Sorry but I had to research some more. If you have the book Lost in Space 25th Anniversary Celebration, the photo's on page 32 clearly shows it to be the restored Robot (see attached).  Sandy (All this over a photo - Definitely my Bipolar kicking in for research).

Hi Sandy,    This is very interesting. I think I do have that book somewhere. I'll have to see if I can dig it out. Thank you!   -Roy

I'm trying to attach the photo's but unable to, so if you have the book, you will see incorrect leg support in it.

These are the Hero legs that were sold on eBay for a hefty purchase if I remember correctly..Image

I think I got this photo from Flint probably in the late 80 s. He should definitely know the source.

It's great to hear this discussion about the hero and stunt robots after so long as they are really what is
most fascinating to me. I saw the restored hero at the 1990 25th Anniv.Boston cast reunion, the day I spoke
to Kevin Burns, met the cast, etc., etc. I can assure you that the hero had the fused knee plates then, and
traces of white paint from Mystery Island in the furrows of the leg bellows. The claws were the horrible
replacements which are straight, stick out too far and still??? are allowed to represent our hero in major
advertising. "Dear Kevin Burns, or present owner of the B9 robot Hero prop....PLEASE REPLACE THE CLAWS
WITH ACCURATE ONES!!!" Now that's off my chest! The tread sections back then were newly fabricated,
NOT the original hero's, I've forgotten why, I guess they were not part of Kevin Burns original acquisition at
the time....The ear sensor dishes were bent on the wrong axis, and other indignities were clearly evident to
anyone who really knew what the hero should look like. The original claws, from what I understand, were
modified for Mystery Island, and so at least at that time, were too much work to restore? It was such a thrill
to meet the cast and see our hero that day regardless of the ravages of time. It would be  nice to know where
the hero is 25 years later... and obtain a full disclosure of where all the original bits ended up.
Our B9 Builders website should contain a full run down and documentation of all this stuff with an "NCIS
forensics" attention to documenting the details....what we have is great, but answers are out there........

Wow, Marc has a good point here. I took a good look at the claws on the picture first posted of the two robots and then an old (truly bad) mystery island photo and they really look the same. I'd guess that the restored robot's claws were either taken from the Mystery Island rebuild or copied for restoration. Here's that pic attached:

My guess is the bottom double claws are the original claws. I think they cut the angled part off of the top claw and glued it to the back of the bottom claw and a new straight claw was made for the top. When the hero was restored it was just assumed the top claw was right and a bottom matching claw was made.

This photo is becoming even more of a mystery. Some great evidence has been added here. I always thought the hero legs were useless after the MI retro-fit, and that s probably because they did appear hardened and looked different, shiny, to me but that fact that you, Marc, saw the hero at the Boston reunion and saw the white paint is proof they were used for a time. The legs in this photo to me look like they did on the show as they never looked that way again. It was the specific way they looked when Bob was in it. There s that first bellow right where the legs spit into two different legs, right below the crotch if you will on the right leg. There s that first  bellow there that always droops. It looks like that on every occasion of the show but never after, never that severe. But I do believe the guys who noticed the Greg Jein altercations on the stunt so I now have to imagine that it s not from the show but is indeed our hero and his stunt double, it s just a question of when. Maybe I ll send Flint an email, he must know. Anyway, you know when these robots were acquired there are some molds that go along with them and duplicate parts were made.

Let s also not forget that the robot did have a sort of career after LIS and before Mystery Island where he would make public appearances and I m sure parts here and there were broken and was in need of replacing with whatever. I remember seeing a photo of the hero on a Jerry Lewis telethon maybe in 1970 and he had an acrylic cake box for a bubble, you know the one more like the Mystery Island flat on the top and bottom kind.

I ve tracked these robots since the 80 s when I reached out to Flint after having discovered LISFAN, I m sure a lot of us did, following the robot s journey after he was unearthed by Kevin. I love researching him and following the trail and getting that photographic evidence. However, there are tons of stuff we ll never know, mostly during the show s run. Case in point, I don t know how many of you remember that there was an original radar on eBay, not screen used but pulled from the mold during the production of the show. I m sure there were many back-up parts during the production of a show where time is money. Anyway, I won that radar and the interesting thing about it is that it had, in resign, the bubble lifter boot so that was part of the radar mold. Interesting to be sure and proof that there s so much we won t know.

As far as after the discovery of both robots in storage, that history we should and can know. I agree with Marc 100% that this should all be documented on the web site and for the most part I think it was to some degree. Posts have been put up and removed over time but I haven t been there in a long time so I don t know what s up now. Wasn t Dan Monroe s brilliant epitaph to the stunt robot (1967-2004) up on the site. I was disappointed that there wasn't a Robot featurette like the Robby one on the 50th Forbidden Planet DVD on the new LIS set.

As far as who owns these robots, it s no secret that the stunt version is in Paul Allen s Sci FI museum or what s left of him. As far as the hero, I think it s been a loosely guarded secret. I know that Mike J was given access and was privy to the original robot when he started his licensed version venture and acquired a ton of first hand, useful information from the original that he wasn t very eager to share with the group. I mean if his replicas were gonna sell they had to be the best, right? Anyway, if that happened, and it did, that means Kevin knows who owns the hero and why wouldn t he, he owned it. I m sure many of the senior members know where the hero is too, I do. I find it amusing as to the secrecy, I mean, if you followed these robot s history, you d know, right? LOL

Are you saying Mike owns the hero?

LOL

Re: Original Hero and Long Distance Robot Side by Side

So I'll take the silence as a "yes". Although I asked Mike a few years ago at one of the Robocons if he owned the hero and he said no. Maybe he just didn't want to say. So I'm not trying to start any arguments or anything but why all the secrecy? I mean if one of us in the club owns the hero, isn't that a good thing? At least he's owned by someone who appreciates it and will take care of it. If I owned him, I'd be proud of it. Share photos and info to better provide info to the club and people who equally appreciate it. Just sayin'!              -Roy

Are you saying Mike owns the hero?
