Battery chargers

Post by James Rauch » Fri Jan 15, 2016 3:44 am

Good evening guys,           I have a self designed sound board for my robot that uses a tiny 3.7v 100ma Li-Po rechargeable battery. I need to be able to charge it (or a couple of same rated batteries at the same time) with a usb wall charger.  If I get a charger rated at 5v 2.1 amp or even 1 amp will I kill the battery (s) or will the battery (s) only take what it needs from the charger?  Thank youJim

I think Li-Po or any lithium battery requires a specific charging circuit so, no a USB wall charger by itself should not be used. You will need additional circuitry or a charger designed to for the battery. Lithium batteries have been known to catch fire and even blow up during either high discharge rates or while charging.   From: B9Builders@yahoogroups.com Sent: Friday, January 15, 2016 12:44 AM To: B9Builders@yahoogroups.com Subject: [B9Builders] Battery chargers

You will damage the batteries from overcharging them.

Thank you Bob, and everyone else who responded. I am glad I asked before I plugged anything in.  Jim  From: B9Builders@yahoogroups.com [mailto:B9Builders@yahoogroups.com]

Attachments : Any Lithium based batteries which are (no pun intended) potentially overcharged have the capability to rupture and start a fire, the latest teen toy craze here in Australia has been those "hoverboards" and heaps of them have started dangerous fires from poorly matched or designed power systems (battery and chargers), and although many of the members may have already used Lithium batteries, I would think twice about it...Interesting topic, probably "spark" some more comments :) [img]cid:AOLP.828273[/img] Basil Grant     -----Original Message-----

Attachments : Jim,   As long as you use the appropriate charger and the cell is not damaged. It is fine. Keep in mind almost every cell phone, electronic gadget and cordless power tool you buy these days are lithium. Many lithium batteries have built in electronics that prevent accidental shorting or complete discharge. IMHO the biggest problem with lithium cells is if you allow them to discharge below a set voltage (I think around 1.7 volts) they will not re-charge unless you use a specialty charging circuit. You can buy these (expensive) types of chargers at hobby shops that sell RC cars and/or planes...   From: B9Builders@yahoogroups.com Sent: Saturday, January 16, 2016 12:30 AM To: B9Builders@yahoogroups.com Subject: RE: [B9Builders] Battery chargers

Subject: [B9Builders] Battery chargers   Good evening guys,          I have a self designed sound board for my robot that uses a tiny 3.7v 100ma Li-Po rechargeable battery. I need to be able to charge it (or a couple of same rated batteries at the same time) with a usb wall charger.   If I get a charger rated at 5v 2.1 amp or even 1 amp will I kill the battery (s) or will the battery (s) only take what it needs from the charger? Thank you Jim

From what I have read in the past, the charger needs to be designed for the battery you are using, it has to do with the temperature of the battrey while charging. As the amperage goes, I do not think more would be bad, just makes ut charge fastet (I am almost certain).
If the usb charger is dor lipo or one made for two like lipo and cad then you should be fine. If it is a slow charger line feom a laptop you might want to check more to see if it would work
Hooe this hells a bit.

I think Li-Po or any lithium battery requires a specific charging circuit so, no a USB wall charger by itself should not be used. You will need additional circuitry or a charger designed to for the battery. Lithium batteries have been known to catch fire and even blow up during either high discharge rates or while charging.   From: mailto:B9Builders@yahoogroups.com Sent: Friday, January 15, 2016 12:44 AM To: B9Builders@yahoogroups.com Subject: [B9Builders] Battery chargers
