a fuse question

Post by Mike Zack » Tue Jan 05, 2016 3:34 pm

Hey guys,

So, in planning the electrical system, I'm thinking I should probably
incorporate some kind of fuse to protect things from getting fried. I'm
going from the AC wall outlet and using a 16amp/125v ac lighted rocker
switch before I get to my 12volt power supply.

The question is, what kind of fuse (and how many amps) should I use
between the AC outlet and the 16amp rocker switch?

Thanks, as always, for your help and know-how!

What is the current draw on the input of your power supply?   From: B9Builders@yahoogroups.com Sent: Tuesday, January 05, 2016 12:34 PM To: B9Builders@yahoogroups.com Subject: [B9Builders] a fuse question

I am certain there is someone with a better answer but I want to share my 2 cents on the subject.
The fuse you plan on installing is to protect your circuit. I know it sounds simple and it is but some times people place a fuse that is rated higher than the circuit and this causes damage if the amperage is over the circuit range and below the fuse. In this case the fuse is rated higher so anything below is fine to the fuse. In selecting the fuse you need to have it rated at or below your circuit rating. For example in your house you have 120VAC and your circuit could be 15 Amps, then if you look at the socket it should be rated 15 amps and the breaker should be 15 amps or lower. If you have an electric water heater (the one you screw in to your shower head and plug) this might be rated 20 amps. In this case you need to have a circuit that can handle 20 amps and an outlet also rated for 20 amps. If you go with a 15 amp receptacle or socket it might burn over time and your breaker will not enter until the amperage is 20. In this case you also need to follow NEC (National Electric Code) to assure that you are using the right wire gauge and other considerations. Now as for fuse you can get a 15 amps for example, slow blow, re-settable, quick blow and there might be others. It depends on your circuit again.
I know I didn't answer anything but I wanted to share my 2 cents because it is more safety related than anything else. Like I mentioned I am certain that there is a member who knows more on electricity and will have a better reply. I know I will be interested in the answer :)
Enjoy the day and thanks for sharing the question :)

Re: a fuse question

Post by Steve Neal » Tue Jan 05, 2016 11:19 pm

You can work it out with "Ohms Law". It is the calculation with regards to Voltage, Current (Amps) and Power (Wattage)Here is an Ohms Law Calculatorhttp://www.ohmslawcalculator.com/ohms-law-calculator

You need at least two values to calculate the thirdVoltage Multiplied by Amps = WattageWattage divided by Voltage = AmpsWattage divided by Amps = Voltage
It your power supply is, for arguments sake, a 30 amp max, 12 volt supply, Then multiply 30 x 12 = 360 Watts. Then, if you have a 360 Watt power supply, the Current (Amps) on the A/C Input side would be - 360 divided by the voltage, in your case, 110 volts and you get 3.27 amps. This will be the maximum current (amps) the power supply will draw if you load it up to a full 30 amps on the 12 volt (secondary) side. This calculation will alter of course depending on the Current rating of your power supply.
The fuse is there to primarily protect the wiring and in this case the 110 volt side. Also the A/C molded plug that plugs into your wall socket should have its Current rating printed on it, and you shouldn't go over that
I hope this all makes sense, let me know if I have explained it poorly and needs clarification or someone more articulate could chime in

Subject: [B9Builders] a fuse question

Mike

Re: a fuse question

Your power supply will have the ratings on the outside on a label or stamped into the metal housing. Report back with the ratings and I'll be happy to offer a recommendation. This fuse will do nothing to protect the electronics attached to the power supply, mind you. It will protect your house from fire in some cases if the supply is shorted for some reason.

Mike
