I'm guessing he has a tube (say PVC for instance) that has a slight bend in it. Then a motor at the back of the arm spins the tube giving the tip of the arms the movement. It is a genius design in that you really only need a motor to spin the tube. It really does look great and it's a great idea! -Roy

Personally I contacted Derval 8 years ago and he is a very nice fellow, we were email buddies for a couple months till my computer hard drive crashed and I had no way of keeping up with him. He (then) lived in Rio de Janeiro and was not a member of the club, although I did try to get him to join. As for his arms he told me the secret and I was totally surprised at the simplicity and genius of his design. I even built a set but never got a chance to mount them on my robot. He also asked me not to tell anyone how he did it. Derval used to have another video where his robot was waving his arms to a song by Julio Iglesias called vous les femmes. it was pretty cool to watch the robot dance while singing in Spanish. Jim
