B9 Power Pack

Post by padingre » Mon Jan 04, 2016 5:08 pm

Good day to all fellow members! J In recent topics we have read about the B9 Power Pack and how fellow Club Members (Bill and Mike if I recall correctly) have made a very original pack. Just a few days ago the Aluminum Pack shared by another member made the B9 fever surge again and it seems the Power Pack is another item on many wants list (as well as mine). I wanted to start this topic so we can share more technical data if possible such as the following:[*]What is the resistors rated wattage?
[*]Why is there a yellow line at the end of the resistor? If it was on the original then I guess that is the answer but this really would not tell us anything more, just the first four bands.
[*]Is there anything on the original transistors, capacitors, trim pot, and the little tan squares (resistor or capacitor?)
Perhaps there is more to add here but I figured to star the thread and build a list with specs in case anyone like myself is interested in getting as near to original components to the power pack. So far based on the pictures found as it relates to the copy made based on the original B9 Power Pack:
 • Seven (7) resistors 22 5% wattage rating unknown
 • Two (2) resistors 10 5% wattage rating unknown
 • Two (2) resistors 2.2 K 5% wattage rating unknown
So far this is what I have been able to obtain as long as that last yellow band is not a real band but something added as part of the prop for the series. I wonder if it meant something J

I would be interested in a power pack as well. I am building the atomic generator for the power supply. Where can I get some nuclear material to activate the central core to power my B9?ThanksPhil B9-673

You'll spend an eternity trying to find the exact components, and they varied from card depending on the circuit. What has been used is the closest match readily available. The resistors are typical 50s era 1/4 or 1/2 watt, Tung Sol transistors, Bournes variable trim pot, metal foil axial lead capacitor, small mica or other (tantalum?) capacitor, etc.And the Viking connectors large and small, fiberglass circuit board (double sided copper I think, as far as I know there is no really good circuit art just pretty close from screen grabs).
I was trying to locate an original card some years ago for study but no luck...My studio I have extensive circuit board production capability and was going to replicate the board exactly with pigmented tint fiberglass sheet laminated to copper foil then photo etched and drilled. If I get hold of an original it could happen, otherwise it's just an approximation from photos.

Go to B9robotbuilders.com page, click Parts Store, Torso, and Power Packs  and see what Bill K has done with his Power Pack for sale. He has done the research..

So many small details... Black or white silkscreen for parts placement identification, serial or stock numbers. The card itself is green or brown tinted fiberglass not composite phenolic as seen by the visible cloth pattern print through and edges. Traces are hand drawn and vary thicker and thinner as hand drawn and double sides copper with all pads drilled through holes. Wave solder over all copper and lacquer over finished assembled card. What it appears and to be exact the card is really needed, and all parts would have to be removed, carefully so it could be reassembled after. I have an expensive Weller vacuum desoldering iron for rework, chucked out $750 plus the Silair silent compressor to power the vacuum another $500
I've spent thousands on equipment over the years and the last two years building new office workbench and lab space for hobby and possible light production. This is something I enjoy not really anything else maybe some aerospace work on the side I did some laminating aircraft wingtip parts recently for Aveo Engineering and restoring my own aircraft a 1946 Republic Seaplane. The robot stuff I still keep around but not really doing much with it the last few years not enough time. I think it was about 3 years ago I almost got hold of an original Singer Librascope General Precision circuit card for study. It was on eBay buy it now $1,100 or opening bid $500 with reserve not met. I bid $500 and no else bid the auction ended and no reply when attempting contact so I forgot about it. Not like I would be come close to recovering that kind of investment selling a replica circuit card. Would have been neat to have though. The other I wanted to try and analyze the circuit as no schematic or specific manufacturer information I have ever seen. This stuff was surplus obtained locally or reasonable distance to the studios and most probably thrown away or recycled by now so it's like looking for a needle in a haystack that might not even be there just a bunch of hay after all the effort. Anyway these pics have been up for a loooong time and were larger high res the link is down I see so it's old news the details anyway and the kits offered are more than nice enough for display it's only a very sharp eye with a magnifying glass would tell any different so it wouldn't affect your robot the small details unless you just want 100% accuracy and then it's a challenge you will find getting picky about the little things.

One last thing, the color of the circuit board most likely was determined by the color of the resin. It is my opinion that a vinyl ester resin was used. Vinyl ester is a little darker tint than polyester also it's much more resistant to softening from contact with fuel or chemicals and much less brittle.I doubt epoxy was used as it is more costly and not as resistant to fuel or chemicals. That my guess from working with all these materials professionally in both the automotive and aerospace industry and looking at the card photos considering the timeline of manufacture, robust mil specs, ect.

Interesting shots...
I will take a deeper look at them later, this one is different from a previous one I looked at. Thanks! :)

Been there, done that :). Check out my parts page. We supply a power pack kit as close to the original as you can get. I have an original and disassembled it many moons ago to replicate it.  We even found surplus electronics that come with the kit including the big blue Bournes trimmer :)

Interesting shots...
I will take a deeper look at them later, this one is different from a previous one I looked at. Thanks! :)

Yes I have a Powerpack you assembled for me from I think the year was 2001...
It looks great very nice indeed, but I can see the differences from the original in photos so I've never assembled the aluminum frame from James with Viking connectors in hopes one day I might find an original. It's not the end of the world or any great concern just something I thought appropriate for my second Powerpack. I was collecting Tung Sol transistors for a while, all the components I could identify and find. That stuffs been sitting in boxes for years now...
Do you have any high res photos of the original sans components?
Many thanks and very kind regard,Robert
