3D Modeling

Post by warpig2011 » Tue Dec 08, 2015 10:08 pm

OK, it's gotten to that point. I've *always* wanted to learn 3D modeling; now with 3D printing finally coming of age, it's time.

Some really n00b basic questions to you 3D gurus:

1. Is there any 3D modeling software that is like Adobe Illustrator in the way it's used? Being familiar with Illustrator, I think I'd find it less confusion.

2. What software(s) would you recommend, based on (in order of my importance) ability to create .obj and .stl printing files, user-friendliness, availability of resources (tutorials, user groups, etc.), standard software within the industry (I'm not going to learn something and then find there's no use for it outside a personal studio!) and cost?

I've looked at a few CAD packages, Blender, 3ds Max, Maya... result: confusion. Image

My goal? Print some bits and bobs for my B9, of course.

Of course I'll chime in here! Try the free program 123D by autodesk. Some people use Sketchup . Both will creat obj or stls both have great user forums. All the programs you listed are designed for 3d animation and not really what you need for b9 parts. Also if you are looking for a 3d printer I can recommend the $799 robo r1 plus. Prints out of the box beautifully and heated glass  bed 10x9x8 and auto leveling ! Great little printer. My 2 .cents

Will,

Your note about the Robo R1 printer over on the EZ-robot board is what gave me the push Image. I checked it out, the specs look really good (plus it prints in ABS and PLA!), the price can't be beat, and someone I know (you) has used it and recommends it.

Heading over to Autodesk now to check out 123D...

Learn SolidWorks. there are student versions available (find a kid in school to get it on the cheap). It's what real engineering companies use and it comes with tutorials that will get you up and running in days.

I don t know if this would help but when the nice people at Microsoft updated my OS from windows 8.1 to windows 10 for free, and without my permission, it came with a free 3D modeling program called 3D Builder ( 3D Builder Windows Apps on Microsoft Store )       I don t know if it s any good or not because I am not smart enough to figure out how to use it, but you can t beat the price.  Jim RauchB9-0355       From: B9Builders@yahoogroups.com [mailto:B9Builders@yahoogroups.com]

Interesting.  I will need to check that out.  So far, I have not been forced to update, but they are now trying to trick you in to updating and if updates are set to automatic, it just does it.  Bummer.

My old computer died three weeks before their free update date and when I was forced to buy this computer I didn t know anything about the OS update and I clicked on a little icon in the lower right corner of my new 8.1 desktop to see what it did, it automatically just started updating to win 10 which is too bad because I was starting to like win 8.1. But yes give it a try, I did but I have no idea how to use it or even if it s any good plus I figure since I will never have a 3d printer of my own there is no need for me to waste any time trying to figure it out.Good luck and let me know what you think.Jim  From: B9Builders@yahoogroups.com [mailto:B9Builders@yahoogroups.com]

Danger Danger... There are tons of YouTube videos on the subject of Windows 10 and it is invasive. Both of my main computers were set to install their new platform even though my settings did not allow updates without permission. Microsoft is not a charitable entity. Why would you suppose it is a free upgrade ? Data mining is the new game in town. Forget about cookies and pop-ups. This new stuff goes much deeper in your machine and your privacy. Just search YouTube and decide if Windows 10 is right for you. Not trying to start up an argument here. Just my opinion.   From: B9Builders@yahoogroups.com Sent: Wednesday, December 09, 2015 9:40 AM To: B9Builders@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [B9Builders] 3D Modeling
