Hello,

I have a B9 project that involves heating and bending some "plastic". It is actually cut from a "poly cutting board", your basic cutting board for the kitchen. There is no indication of what type of plastic it is on the labels or stamped in the plastic.

Does anyone have some experience with working with this type of plastic, as to what temperature and time limits work well for bending it. I was planning on using a small toaster oven with a temperature control. My pieces will be relatively small, about 3 inches long and 1.75 inches wide. Because of the groove already on the edge, I will use this edge to try to bend a 90 degree angle. I thought that the groove, being on the inside of the bend, will help make a neater bend. By the way, it is about 3/8 inch thick.

If I had to guess, I would think that this plastic is a polypropylene, but I am not sure.

I took a plastics shop in high school.
We didn't heat the entire piece of plastic for a bend.
They had a special heater for bends like that.  It was two flat, rectangular metal pieces that were side by side.  There was a heating element in the gap.
So, you placed your plastic on top of the heating element where you wanted the bend.

It was a bit of an art form as too much heat and it would melt the plastic to the point it would drip.
You bend the piece away from the heated side.

thanks for the very useful and helpful information on bending plastic. It is nice to be able to approach a new task in an informed way. I don't mind making mistakes, but I have a much better idea of what to attempt and how.
