Welcome to the B9 Builder s Club! Am still consider myself a newbie and I am still learning the best way to build. Now there are members here that actually build parts in what is determined as runs and sells them to those that are on a list. There are some that have parts on stock so there is no need to be on a list. Then there are some that decides to upgrade or simple sell what they have. Overall it is a very dynamic process but the key is to have fun!!!
If you can make your own parts then go for it, but from my experience you want to make sure you use the latest specification if you want to go the B9 way J. You will see variations on the web and different materials of construction so it is your call as to what you want to go to. I have done my share of buying and have sent out to make my own parts but let s say it is a nice class I am taking and still haven t passedJ. The member s here are very human and cool to deal with.
I can say that I have gotten the Bubble from Fred and it doesn t get better than this. Then the Brain Cup from Norman and the work on the aluminum is awesome. You have members like Craig that brings to the table a life of experience with B9 and busting paradigms like the 108 rib theory J (we liked that one). I have not purchased yet but have heard only praises on Gary s Lens and there are other parts as well.
My advice, like they told me is to decide if you want a look alike B9, a B9 costume, or a more mechanized B9. Also read read read and did I mention read J (also ask questions). I wish I could give you all the information because I am certain I am missing out here but I am certain others will chime in as well.
