Annnnd Another Power Supply Goes Boom

Evening All
First of all there is no damage save for my nerve. On Sunday (my weekend build day) I was messing about with a servo (not connected to this supply) when suddenly my Meanwell 5 volt power supply went boom. Lots of ozone, sparks, some smoke, and disdainful looks from the French Bull dogs. The unit wasn't touching any metal and I had double checked my wiring. I'm thinking it was because I was feeding 12 volts into a power supply rated for 110 to 220 input converting to a 5 volt output.
Could that be right? Too low an input?
Any advice always welcome. All fingers still intact and lesson learned :-)

Danial,
First, I'm glad your OK and didn't get hurt. So now, let me try to understand what you just wrote;
You have a power converter that is rated for input voltage of 120/240 volts AC (I'm guessing it's selectable input voltage and you have it set to 110 volts AC?). I'm also assuming from some of your past posts that it's rated to output 12 volts DC. Am I correct?
Then you tried to input 12 volts DC input into this power supply expecting to get it to output 5vdc?
Please don't take this wrong Daniel and I say this with the love of a brother but why would you think that would work? I'm sure this is why you smoked it. The more expensive power converters have reverse voltage protection along with other types of fail safes to keep things like this killing the converter. Sounds like yours didn't. Lower voltage usually won't hurt things as long as you you haven't applied your load yet. However once you turn on your load with low voltage you can burn up both your supply and your device. Also, AC voltage acts much different than DC voltage and the components inside the power supply are very different when converting AC to DC and visa versa. Without a PS with proper built in protection for a mistake like this and BOOM, FLASH and SMOKE!
Time to buy a new power supply and consider a lesson learned. Never use equipment outside of their rates specs.

Be very careful with electronics and esp power supplies!  Robots are great fun but not worth personal injury.  Glad you are OK

Like Dave said, giving a steady DC voltage to a power supply designed for AC input can overheat things.  I'm surprised that you got any output at all.

I'm thinking it was because I was feeding 12 volts into a power supply rated for 110 to 220 input converting to a 5 volt output.   Could that be right? Too low an input?  Any advice always welcome. My postings tend to cause a lot of response for some odd reason :-P
The unit converts AC to DC and reduces voltage from 110 (don't know why I said 240 earlier) to 5 volts. I was feeding it a far lower amount AND imputing DC instead of AC because I connected to the wrong power distribution block. Luckily I had no components connected. And just as Ollie suggested I realized I could use converters (in fact I had several exactly like the one he posted) to accomplish the same task and by Sunday evening everything was repaired. The power supply that went boom originally was supplying several components. That's why I had still had it connected. Over time I've rerouted and simplified. It was going to go eventually (just didn't need to so spectacularly)
The electronics portion (specifically power distribution and control) of my build has been the biggest challenge for me and the learning curve has been steep. I think I've redone all the wiring at least 3 times.
Soldering 101 was not in my Ph.D. work in clinical psych ;-)

The more expensive power converters have reverse voltage protection along with other types of fail safes to keep things like this killing the converter. Sounds like yours didn't. Lower voltage usually won't hurt things as long as you you haven't applied your load yet. However once you turn on your load with low voltage you can burn up both your supply and your device. Also, AC voltage acts much different than DC voltage and the components inside the power supply are very different when converting AC to DC and visa versa. Without a PS with proper built in protection for a mistake like this and BOOM, FLASH and SMOKE!
Time to buy a new power supply and consider a lesson learned. Never use equipment outside of their rates specs.
